28 June 2022 Day 1 Heading to our Destination

Departed Brisbane just after 10am with the bikes securely stowed on the van

Pulled in at a servo for lunch just before reaching Gympie, hoping that they served meals. 

As soon as we pulled in we remembered that we had stopped here before, in fact pulled up almost at the same spot!!!! 
As my blog entry from the first day of our round Australia trip in 2018 showed!….

We took a turn off to the left soon after leaving our lunch spot, going along the Mary River Rd


so that we could enjoy a more picturesque route rather than staying on the highway.Picturesque it was too.
First of all we crossed the still very full and flowing Mary River







We passed an area where there were masses of Solar Panels some of them still being installed. Further down the road we found out what it was - the Woolooga Solar Farm
Research came up with this..


Wasn’t long before we reached Kilkivan. 


We decided to checkout the town first before heading to our campsite




We specifically looked for the start of the Rail Trail considering this was why we chose to camp at Kilkivan. 








As we had heard and as we suspected the trail from here was closed after the recent flooding of the area and hadn’t been reopened 




There were some very pretty flowers on the side of the trail


As time was marching on we then headed back out of Kilkivan to Running Creek Rd and to our Hipcamp location





We were met at the gate by our very friendly hosts Mark and Ina and taken to our campsite



Plenty of space to set up in and the whole place to ourselves


We had trouble starting the tracking that we have been using with HEMA maps so we used Gaia, the app that Bill uses to track our walks.
It worked very well and in fact recorded the detail of where we started and ended the days journey.


Surprised not to feel too cold when first setting up but as the sun went down it got colder and colder

Today is Bill’s Independence Day celebration of 20 years!! A bit wet and muddy at our campsite A lot of rain around today too Not to be daunted we still headed out to explore more of the region… Lots of Roos at the gate of the property on our way out. Stopped to get photos and video of a couple of them scrapping   First stop The Chimney Lots of things to see on the way too.,.  Fay Hen Creek that we crossed over several times These cows were walking along beside the fence. There were more that look just the same with the pretty white markings on, that I took video of  I also took video of us splashing through the creek crossings, I did manage to catch the splash on this one through the open window and didn’t get wet Came across this wash out where a temporary by pass road had been constructed  Finally we reached the end of the navigable road and fortunately at the right place because here was the amazing Chimney structure  A bit of a history on this informat...

3 July 2022 Spending the day with Mark and Ina

Mark had offered to take us on the walk in Mudlo National Park in the morning so we took him up on his offer. However, we ended up spending all day with them, and a fabulous day it was too, The arrangement we made was to meet Mark and Ina at their house at 10am, we drove into the camping area at Gre’valley to check it out before driving up to the house Certainly another suitable pretty area for camping Once we met up with our hosts, we followed them in their car out of the property, onto Running Creek rd Over the running creek in the opposite direction to the way we have been going out on, to link up with Mudlo Rd Mudlo Rd started out as surfaced but then became a gravel rd I had found this information about Mudlo on the web, the day before We parked at the start of this track But the start of the track to Pearson lookout was the other side of the creek Some amazing historic trees along the way and interesting vines Quite a few steps to ascend along the way The sun did start to come ou...

1st July 2022 Cycling from Murgon to Wondai with Jim and Helen

Misty misty wet morning. Still planning to ride the last section of the trail today though, in spite of the rain!!! Heading to Murgon, to catch up with Jim and Helen who had spent the night in a motel there. Crossing over Wide Bay Creek on the way to Murgon We sat and chatted with Jim and Helen in their motel room, before heading out into the wet to start riding our bikes. Jim and Helen had this useful map that covered the area that we were going to cycle today Ready to head off wearing our wet weather gear, although it turned out we still ended up pretty wet at the finish of the ride, Assembled here at the rather insignificant start to the trail At least there was a rail carriage on railway lines here The Murgon Station building in good condition  Nice to see the old station building being put to good use Bill and Jim on the station platform The starter marker for this section of the trail Off we go….
